Why
should I
adopt a pet?
Adopting a dog is accepting a once unlucky dog into your house and making sure that they are loved and properly taken care of. Many people who adopted pets in the past said it was one of the best experiences they chose to have in their lives.

Why adopt a dog from Sled Dog Rescue?
There are many really good reasons to offer once betrayed or abandoned dog a loving and carrying home. But maybe, one of the main reasons is “Why not?”. Do we even have to question the rightness of such action. It is not only a good thing to do, but it is the right thing to do.
How to apply for adoption?
Ready to adopt a dog? When there are so many beautiful dogs, with their eyes looking straight into your soul, making a choice may be a real challenge.
In the end they all deserve a loving home and if your mind set on adoption, you feel you can offer it to any of them.
However, even within one breed, dogs have their individualities, their own likes and dislikes, preferences and tastes. Each dog needs an enviroment that is best suited for their characters. The challenge is to make sure that the dog you want will settle into your enviroment and we are there to make this happen.
This is why we follow certain procedures, which help us evaluate the dog’s character and adopter’s qualities, to try create the most perfect match.
So what do you have to do to make the right choice and apply for adoption?
1st Step
Go to our Dogs for Adoption page. After you finish reading this article review the dogs that are looking for homes. Look at their photos and videos, but also read the description of each dog’s character carefully. It should help you understand which one would match with your character. Once you made your decision, right under the description there is a link to Adoption Application. Fill it out, push send and wait for us to get back to you. You will be contacted within 48 hours ( except week-ends).
2nd Step
e-mail/phone interview to clarify some extra questions we or you may have.
If a dog is in foster care in your area we can arrange a meeting. We can also advise the locations of the kennels in Cyprus in case you wish to fly to meet the dog in person before making a final decision.
3rd Step
If the phone interview was successful, we make arrangements to proceed with home check. What does that mean? A volunteer appointed by our organization will pay a visit to your home.
Why this is necessary? For many reasons, but the one reason is to detect areas that may cause problems in the dog-human relationship or negatively interfere with the dog’s adaptation ( such as low fencing, neighbor’s cat freely roaming on your property; or objects that may need to be removed for dog’s safety). Home check is aimed to make sure that the environment is safe for the dog and that risks of something bad happening are reduced to minimum. We want this to be a pleasant experience for both, dog and a human.
If your home check was not approved that does not make you a bad person, but most likely that the organization does not have the right dog for you, yet.
4th Step
Passed home check with highest marks? Then next step is signing an Adoption Agreement and paying the Adoption Fee. The Adoption fee has to be paid upfront. Then depending on dog’s location, we proceed to fly them to the closest possible airport or other transport arranged if possible.
Adoption fee
This is collected to recover part of the upfront expenses by our organization during the rescue of the dog. Also the adoption fee is a way to ensure to our organization that the adopter has the resources to cover the extra costs needed to provide a good home and responsible care for their animal.
The 450 Euro adoption fee covers some of our expenses in providing the following:
1. Blood test for Mediterranean diseases. ( Anaplasmosys, Leishmaniosis, Erlichiosis)
2. Microchip
3. Vaccinations ( against Parvo/Rabies/Distemper)
4.Spaying/Neutering ( if age/health condition allows)
If there are any special health condition detected in dog it is mentioned in dog’s description and potential adopters are warned and instructed on further supplements or any additional treatment the dog may need after being adopted.
5. De-worming treatment
6. Anti tick/flea treatment
7. International passport
8. TRACES Certificate
9. Flight/Transport costs
10. Pre-flight grooming
11.Travel crate return.
Most of the times, except the situation when groomer is fully booked/not available, which happens very very rarely, all dogs arrive groomed. In some situations we get dogs with very matted fur and we are forced to shave them. The reality is that providing the above costs us in excess of 600 euros per dog. Because we are not always able to place the dogs in foster care, some of them need to be placed in private kennels, for which we pay monthly fee per dog. Most of the adoption fee is spent on travel expenses, that sometimes can reach as high as 300 Euros.
If you agree with the adoption process and adoption fee, its just the perfect time to find your companion and love of your life. Your best friend who can’t wait to finally meet you. Push the LINK to see which one is your future pet.
Thank you!
